What does a deep tissue massage therapist do?

Deep tissue massage is based on the idea that deep pressure applied to painful or tight areas can help to realign the muscles and connective tissues that are causing pain and dysfunction in the body. It uses deeper pressure and slower movement  than Swedish massage does, in order to affect deeper layers of tissue. However, it is similar in other ways to Swedish massage – such as the types of strokes used. It used not primarily for relaxation purposes, focusing instead on relief of pain or tension. Deep tissue massage includes specific techniques such as myofascial release and trigger point therapy, as well.

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage encourages increased blood flow to the affected area, which can improve healing. It also moves toxins out of the muscles and bloodstream into the lymphatic system where they can be removed from the body. It is especially effective for sports injuries, chronic pain, and areas of tension and tightness. Deep tissue massage is believed to break up knots that are deeper in the muscle than other massage techniques can reach, as well as to help realign the body in a more healthful way.

When you get a deep tissue massage it should not cause a lot of pain but may cause some soreness. It is not as comfortable and relaxing as other forms of massage but it is frequently more effective for pain relief. After your massage, drink a lot of fluids to help flush released toxin out of the body. Also consider a hot bath or sauna to relax the muscles, and rest to help them recover.
